Why Conserve Our Resources?
Conserving the Earth’s resources has become one of the most important global issues. Staggering statistics and research continues to demonstrate the importance of making changes now in our business practices to help protect our global resources and climate. Some of the more significant environmental issues in the world today are:
 An alarming rate of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
A gradual increase in the earth’s surface temperature over the last 140 years compared
to that of the last 1,000-year average.
Compared to any other country in the world, the U.S. produces more landfill garbage

According to the World Resources Institute,® by 2025 half of the world may live
in water-stressed areas.
JBSS is taking steps to become an environmental leader. It is our hope that our environmental vision, focus and actions will serve as an example for our customers, vendors and consumers.
And as an industry leader, JBSS is proud to do our part when it comes to environmental conservation. From reducing the energy we use to recycling programs to sustainable packaging, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment today and for generations to come.

JBSS has recently been recognized and awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and PepsiCo for Innovation in Sustainable Business Practices (click here for press release). JBSS was among the first manufacturing sites to be recognized by the EPA for meeting its Energy Star Challenge for Industry by reducing energy consumption by 10% within 5 years or less. The PepsiCo Center of Excellence Award recognizes JBSS as a sustainable business partner. |

Here are just a few examples of the initial steps we have taken to reduce

Supply Chain:
extending our “green” reach beyond our own company to
that of our suppliers
In cooperation with our transportation company, JBSS
achieved a 3% reduction of CO2 per pounds shipped in
FY10

Manufacturing:
Replacing plant high-intensity discharge lighting with
fluorescent lighting and installing sensory lighting in all
locations
A 2.3 million gallon water reduction in FY10, which is
enough water to fill 3.5 Olympic-size swimming pools
A 7.8% reduction in electricity usage in FY10, the equivalent
to taking 336 cars off the road

Lightweighting, Sustainable, & Degradable:
JBSS internal recycling program including materials such as
film, product waste, paper, plastics, corrugate, water.
Composite cans are made from 50% recycled paperboard
material
PET plastic used for packaging has highest recycling rate in
the US
JBSS recycled over 4.5 million pounds last fiscal year. This
is almost 45% of its waste stream.
